A music student is hoping to break a world record by completing the London Marathon - while playing her saxophone.

Jess Tiso, of Coton Park, Linton, aims to become part of the fastest marching marathon band when she competes in the race on April 13, to raise £60,000 for the deaf-blind charity Sense.

She will be one of about 30 members of the Huddersfield Marathon Band from the University of Huddersfield, where the 20 year old is in her second year.

The band must complete the 26.2 mile route within seven hours to re-clinch the title which they held until 2012, when a German band beat their record of seven hours and 55 minutes by 22 minutes.

Jess said, "To hold the World Record again will just be the cherry on top of the massive ice-cream sundae of completing the London Marathon.

"The German team did well, but we will reclaim the title. If you happen to come across us on the track just watch the instruments.

"We're not stopping for anyone, we have a record to claim back."

The saxophonist, who has played the instrument for 10 years, said the band had been training hard, working on march drills and running to get prepared for the big day. The band put their training to the test when they completed a half marathon in February.

Jess said, "I have never done anything like this before. The youghest part was having enough air to breathe while playing and marching at the same time. But the team spirit kept me going. Plus I got to play my solo on 'Speedy Gonzales'. which has a really fun sax part.

"I'm quite excited, to be honest, about completing the London Marathon - there are a few nerves but we're all looking forward to it."

Anyone who would like to sponsor Jess can do so by visiting www.justgiving.com/Jessica-Tiso or by texting TISO93 to 70070 with the amount they wish to pledge.

Sense is a national charity that has supported and campaigned for children and adults who are deafblind for more than 50 years.

There are currently around 250,000 deafblind people in the UK.

Sense provides specialist information, advice and services to these people, their families, carers and the professionals who work with them.

Deafblindness is a combination of both sight and hearing difficulties.

Some of these people are completely deaf and blind, but others have some use of one or both senses.

Word of thanks

I would like to say a very sincere "thank you" to everyone who came and supported my Nan's Coffee Morning on May 25th to raise money for my entry in next year's London Marathon, playing music all around the 26 miles in aid of the Children's Deaf and Blind Charity.

Many people gave donations of cakes, produce, prizes and cash, raising a total of £230. Many thanks to you all.
